According to the National Achievement Survey 2021, girls and boys start off on an equal footing in mathematics, but by the time they reach high school, a disparity has developed. In this article, I have shared “Thumbs Down For Online Education”.

By class X, guys dramatically surpass girls in terms of learning results.

This is an odd discovery, given that data suggests that girls are better or equal learners in other topics throughout their schooling.

In class III, the national average score for girls in mathematics (301) is not significantly different from that of boys (300).

Then in class V when girls scored 280 and the boys 281.

In class VIII, the national average score for both boys and girls are equal, but in some states, girls’ performance appears to be dropping.

In class X, this gap becomes starker with national scores putting girls at 216 and boys at 219.


Throughout all school levels, girls continue to surpass boys in this subject.

By the eighth grade, girls had scored 312 and boys had scored only 302.



In class VIII, both girls (211) and boys (210) did equally well, with girls (211) outperforming boys (210) in class X.

In social science, high school girls outperformed boys by 3 and 2 points, respectively.

In general, girls match or outperform boys in all disciplines, with the exception of mathematics, where the difference widened as children progressed through the grades.


There is a disparity in learning results as well.

In class III, rural schools begin with a higher score (302) than urban schools (299), but fall one point behind in class V.

In science and social science, too, rural high school pupils perform badly compared to their urban peers.

Covid Impact


While the rural-urban divide is nothing new, the epidemic exacerbated the problem, especially for children.

Everyone was forced to take their classes online due to the lockdowns.

Due to a lack of access to a gadget or consistent internet, rural Indian students were at a considerable disadvantage.

A quarter of the pupils polled said they didn’t have access to a digital gadget at home.

Those who did engage in online learning felt it to be a strain since they were overburdened with tasks.

An overwhelming majority of 80 percent of students indicated they learned more at school when they had the help of their friends.

The Survey

The report, which included 34 lakh pupils from 1,18,274 schools, will shape future state and UT government education efforts.

The goal is to determine the levels of progress and learning competencies of children in order to assess the educational system’s efficiency.

The most disturbing finding, according to UNICEF India research, is that the pandemic resulted in an alarming dropout rate among pupils, particularly girls.
